MyBib is an electronic document delivery system for books, periodicals, contracts, certificates and files for use in libraries, archives and registries. The question is, what about all the thesis and dissertations that are not yet electronically available and are stored on paper and microfilm?

As a manufacturer of the family of BookeyeŽ scanners we have had a lot of discussions with librarians and their needs for knowledge transfer. One topic discussed was the gap that exists between the in-creasing demand for thesis and dissertations that are electronically available and the reality of those that still exist on paper and microfilm.

To close this gap and others like electronic document delivery via ILL and/or an alternative to ARIEL - we were asked by librarians to develop an open WEB based system for the electronic delivery of thesis and dissertations that existed on paper and microfilm. The developing guidelines were settled that the system were to be a browser-based user interface, the usage of PHP, Apache, MySQL and further that the system should run on the Windows and Linux operating systems. The result was MyBib, a platform that covers:

  • Electronic document delivery
  • Scan on-demand application rather than entire stocks
  • Back file conversion to supply extended OPAC's

Request for documents to be scanned and delivered can be issued to MyBib by any library system such as OPAC or free style WEB-form via ILL, XML or e-mail. MyBib covers the entire process from beginning to end covering the incoming request, scanning of the documents and their delivery. Included in the system are modules that cover tracking, billing, claim handling, statistics and other functions and support the management and supervisors of the library in their jobs.

Scaleable from one to multiple scanning stations, operating and management locations MyBib covers the needs of large libraries with single locations or libraries with satellite libraries that are distantly located from the central library. All can be supervised from one location anywhere in the world via the Internet or a VPN with a browser.

To get the thesis and dissertations from paper and microfilm to digital format requires them to be scanned. This is handled by the Scan-client in MyBib. This Scan-client covers overhead, flatbed and autofeed book and document scanners and microfilm scanners. Also covered are digital copiers/scanner/printers from major manufacturers such as RICOH, Canon and others. If the scanner supports color scanning and large format scanning up to A1 size, MyBib supports that as well.

How does all this effect intellectual property rights? To help protect these rights MyBib has an electronic endorser that imprints on the delivered electronic documents a digital watermark to prove the information source or imprints a copyright statement with a date stamp.
