Loan Periods
Loan periods are set by the Library Regulations. Journals cannot be borrowed. To borrow, users must hold a valid library card. The lending services desk is also where fees and fines are paid (fees for library card if you are an external user or overdue fines).
Borrowing Items from the Central Library
The guaranteed loan period and the conditional renewal are printed on the issue slip:
- Leihfristende is the guaranteed loan period.
- Unter Vorbehalt verlängert: this is the renewed date that our library system will automatically set. However, the automatic renewal is conditional on the item not being reserved by another user in the meantime. In this case, the borrower will be notified that he must return the book within ten weekdays.

Renewal
Items can be renewed twice:
- The first renewal is an automatic renewal carried out by our library system if no other user has reserved the item in question.
- A second renewal can be made by you yourself via your library account. The second renewal for another 20 days (excluding weekends and public holidays) can be made earliest 10 days before the end of the loan period. The 20 days will always be added to the original return date regardless of the date you make the second renewal. However, no second renewal is possible for academic staff as their first renewal period is already 110 days.
Special Loan
Works from our reference collection ("Handbibliothek") at the Central Library or journals can only be borrowed as an exception overnight or over the weekend. Please ask our staff at the reference desk.
Borrowing Items from Departmental Libraries
Our Departmental Libraries are reference libraries. Items (maximum 5 books) can only be borrowed overnight or over the weekend. Reservation and renewal of items is not possible. For the Departmental Libraries of Economics and Mechanical Engineering, which are located in the Central Library building, the loan borrowing conditions of the Central Library apply.
Professors and academic staff may officially borrow books from the Departmental Library of their faculty for 130 days if they keep the books in their office on campus. They may borrow books from other Departmental Libraries for 20 days. The latter also applies to professors emeriti.
